Therapy for Individuals in Relationship with a Narcissist

20110328_7202_WEB.FINAL.cherry-blossomsIf your parent is a narcissist or you are in a relationship with a narcissist, you probably feel unheard and unloved when you interact with them. That is because a narcissist is often more concerned with how your actions will reflect on and affect them, rather than focusing on your feelings and well-being. Nothing you do is ever quite right or good enough in their eyes. You may only be able to gain their approval and love when you do what pleases them, rather than what will bring you happiness. Their behavior toward you may cause you great concern and distress. You may not trust your own instincts and even doubt your self-worth.

A narcissist can be your mother, father, spouse or partner

If you are in a relationship with a narcissist, I provide therapy that can help you on your journey. You will find a safe place to heal from narcissistic abuse. I have been certified in Dr. Karyl McBride‘s 5-step recovery model for dealing with narcissists. I am also certified in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing), a trauma therapy that is a clinically proven modality for healing the trauma of a narcissistic relationship. My therapy approach is compassionate, thorough and solutions focused.

Through our sessions, you will learn how to develop coping mechanisms that enable you to make healthy choices when dealing with a narcissist. You will better understand their behaviors, your triggers, be able to set personal boundaries and positively process your feelings.

How do you know if someone is a narcissist?

Narcissism exists on a continuum ranging from a few narcissistic traits to full-blown Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD). The characteristics of a Narcissist include:

  • A belief that one is special and unique
  • Lack of empathy, preoccupation with their own emotions
  • Sense of arrogance, demeans or bullies others
  • A deep need for excessive attention and admiration
  • Grandiose sense of importance, jealousy of others

I provide therapy from my office in Kentfield and I work with clients from throughout Marin County, Sonoma County, San Francisco and the East Bay. Please contact me to learn how I can support you. I look forward to speaking with you.
